lolz to Matt Aullz, secretly a shy, sensitive young man who is compelled to hide behind a macabre masque of human parody so he might interact with the world without fear of palpable hurt.
Behold Indianapolis' Phantom of the punk rock opera!

Whatsup GARY! you seem to have a very strong opinion of this movie due to the amount of butt hurt you got reading it. I'll I have to say is I find it pretty dumb you are critiquing his critique in a way that is nor constructive or conversation building. Your just shedding your useless opinion to people who don't care about you, they care about the main post. Not the dude who reads to many blogs and takes movies way to personally. Stop trying to change the world through the comment section and just keep your useless un interesting opinion to yourself!

Eastwood's direction is restrained, as it usually is. The problems (which aren't massive) are less with his direction than with the screenplay. Because the story covers such a variety of stages in the life of Christine, each section has its own type of climax. The story changes tone slightly each time this happens, particularly in the segment when Christine is not present (when the cops are hunting down the killer). The multiple climaxes rob the film of an ultimate emotional climax, particularly with an extended coda five years or so after the execution.

"I should have stated, more correctly, that although there is an overarching story its fractured and disjointed tone detracts from the emotional impact of the film."

I find this statement truly bizarre. Eastwood's matter-of-fact, indeed, restrained, direction is evident from start to finish. There are no sequences that are 'jarring', the tone is that of a lament (for Mrs) Collins & suffused with a kind of cold anger at what this woman was put through. Yes, very Eastwood.

Sorry, but I really have no idea where you're coming from on this.

Thanks for the comment, Gary. You are certainly correct in that there is a common thread through all of the stages of the film, in Christine's quest to find her son.

However, none of these sections are similar in tone or mood, and the multiple climaxes lead to a jarring narrative. I should have stated, more correctly, that although there is an overarching story its fractured and disjointed tone detracts from the emotional impact of the film.

Thanks again!

"The worst problem lies in the structure of the film. At two hours and twenty minutes it has the feel of an epic, but there is no over-arching story driving it."

Er, Christine's quest to find out what happened to her son is 'the overarching story driving it' as you put it.

It appears to have passed you by that each of the multiple storylines always come back to Christine & her son. Try watching the film again. :-)
